Generations of Storytelling & Tradition
Sweeneys Hotel, Dungloe
From its beginnings in the late 1840s, Sweeney's Hotel has been woven into the fabric of life in Dungloe. Once a bustling coaching inn on the Wild Atlantic coastal route, the hotel welcomed travellers, traders, and storytellers alike. It became a lively hub for locals and visitors at a time when hospitality in Donegal was built on fireside warmth and genuine connection.
Established by John (Johndy) and Mary Sweeney in the 19th century, the hotel quickly became one of the most respected establishments in the northwest, known not just for its rooms and refreshments, but as a place where deals were made, dances held, and generations of stories began.
Today, after a sensitive and imaginative restoration by cousins PJ and Kevin Boyle, Sweeney's has been brought beautifully into the present. It retains the spirit of its past while stepping confidently into a new era.
The hotel now features 16 bespoke, adult-only bedrooms and suites, each individually styled with thoughtful touches and quiet luxury. Several pay tribute to some of Donegal's most beloved names, including the Daniel O'Donnell Suite, Margo O'Donnell Suite, Gay Byrne Suite, Moya Brennan Suite, and the Packie Bonner Room.
From refined dining in Glas Restaurant and celebrations in the restored ballroom, to relaxed afternoons in the heated courtyard and freshly baked pastries from the on-site Bácús bakery, Sweeney's blends tradition and modern comfort in every corner.
It's more than just a place to stay. It's a story worth stepping into.
